Misperception About Qurban Worship

In Indonesia, the qurban worship which is done every eid-adha is identical with slaughtering qurban cattles. Such as slaughtering lamb, sheep or cow. So, then the word of Qurban has been already identical with slaughtering the cattles as sacrifices.

This is where the misperception about the qurban worship is happened. Hence, if we asked to several people why did not they doing qurban during eid adha, then they will answer that they do not have money to buy the cattle for qurban.

In fact, what is the true meaning of qurban? Qurban comes from the arabic word which means close. The word of qurban was taken from the words of : qaruba (fi’il madhi) – yaqrabu (fi’il mudhari’) – qurban wa qurbaanan (mashdar), which means getting close. So, the word of qurban truely means some kind of worshiping in order to get closer to Allah swt.

Then, how did the Qoran explains about this qurban? The qurban worship in fact had been existed long time before the prophet of Ibrahim as and Ismail as. This already happened when two sons of the prophet Adam as were instructed to make sacrifices to Allah swt in the form of their agricultural or livestock products in their efforts to get closer to Allah swt.

وَاتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ابْنَيْ آدَمَ بِالْحَقِّ إِذْ قَرَّبَا قُرْبَانًا فَتُقُبِّلَ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا وَلَمْ يُتَقَبَّلْ مِنَ
الْآخَرِ قَالَ لَأَقْتُلَنَّكَ ۖ قَالَ إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ
“And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice [qurban to Allah ], and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. Said [the latter], "I will surely kill you." Said [the former], "Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous [who fear Him].” (QS 5:27)

In such case, there was no slaughtering had happened, because both Qabil and Habil were not slaughtering any cattle for their qurban which were sacrificed, but instead they only did sacrificing their agricultural or livestock products.

So, then it can be concluded that the qurban worship is any kind of worships which are intended to get closer to Allah swt.

Eventually, if that is the case, so then whenever during the holyday of eid adha someone had slaughtered the cattle with the true intension in his heart for the sake of good self-image, for the sake of maintaining his prestiges, or for the sake of any other reasons, then such things were not a kind of qurban worship.

On the contrary, if someone with full of sincere had been done something in their efforts to get closer to Allah swt, such as doing dhikr, doing wirid, or attending the tauhid session where its place is quite far, with the intension only for getting closer to Allah swt, then such kind of deeds are part of the qurban worship.
